Tropical Wonderland

Last Thursday, we departed from Isla Colon to Coco Vivo, a resort of sorts on Isla de San Cristobal. We were ready to get away from Bocas Town but did love our spot north of town.

We haven’t done a lot since getting here. We have spent a lot of time laying on the dock and reading. It has been a dream of mine to stay in lodging over the water, and this fulfilled the dream. The resort is nestled in some mangroves on an inlet in Bahía del Almirante.

The resort is fairly isolated. It was a 30 minute boat ride from Bocas Town and there is nothing nearby.

There are things to do other than sitting on the dock though. Yesterday we kayaked over to a fried chicken shack, sadly it was closed but the flat waters made an easy kayak.

Today, we did some stand up paddle boarding and saw a ton of starfish while doing so. We haven’t seen as much wildlife or birds here as we did at our last spot.

There is excellent snorkeling right off the main dock with a reef and a sunken boat (see video). We saw an octopus while snorkeling, along with sea anemones, urchins, starfish and lots of fish (plus coral).

The best part is the bioluminescent algae though. We have experienced it before but nothing like this spot, where you glow as you swim. Truly magical.

I did mention that it’s sorta a resort. No hot water, composting toilets, and well not much infrastructure to speak of. But definitely glad we came.
