A different sort of cooking class

Today was quite a different day in Hoi An. After getting massages and eating some Banh Mi, we took a cooking class. This cooking class was quite different than other ones we have taken.

First stop was the market to take a look at vegetables and meats that we would cook. We got to try a Pomelo, which we thought we hadn’t tried but actually had. It was like a giant grapefruit.

Then we got into the water coconut leaf boats. They were these weird round boats made of water coconut leaves.

From there we went fishing….for crabs! Ash was delighted by the effort, and she caught 2 crabs. I only caught 1. Oh well, it was fun.

The boat tour was through the water coconut grove in the river, and there were other tourists.

Lots of other tourists, specifically Korean tourists on the tours. They were in large groups. They had loud K-Pop playing.
We even saw multiple Karoake (Link to video) groups about. The Vietnamese are crazy about Karaoke, as apparently are the Koreans.

After this, we took the cooking class. We cooked three dishes – spring rolls, these rice pancake things, and a carrot-mango salad. The dishes probably won’t be recreated at home, as they were all deep fried. They were pretty heavy, but tasty.

The host even cooked more food for us including fried shrimp, stir fried morning glory, clam soup, fish and a dessert of fruit. It was quite the adventure, and absolutely charming. We did it in the afternoon and the crowd thinned out. The vibe in this sleepy fishing village matched what you would expect.
