Ephesus

Part of the rational to come to this area of Turkey was to visit Ephesus. The ancient city and former capital of Roman Asia Minor is a UNESCO world heritage site (usually pretty dope) and also highly recommended by my mother.

Our guidebook recommended a late afternoon arrival after all the tour buses had left to avoid crowds. Sadly that didn‘t seem to work but we are glad we went on a day with no cruise ships in port (deliberately).

Despite the crowds, the site was amazing. The level of preservation was astounding, and we especially liked the Terrace Houses, which were 8 intertwined houses from Rome, mainly from 300BC to 270 AD, when the site was abandoned due to earthquake and fire.

Our ticket also offered access to the Ephesus Experience Museum, a sound and light show to give you a feel for the ancient city. It was devoid of substance and overly dramatic, but Ashley loved the sparkle and flash. Overall definitely worth a visit.

What was really worth a visit was the farmer’s market we hit on the way home. It was pretty tough to find a parking spot, per pretty much every farmer’s market of all time but wow what a beast. The eggplants are gorgeous, the peppers are radiant and the cooked treats are so tasty. We particularly like the flatbread with spinach and feta in it. But the rolled phylo eggplant wraps were amazing too.
