Hot, Hot, Hot.

Today, we got up early and did some birding at our AirBNB. While every place, we have gone has had birds, our airbnb seems to be a hot spot.

I didn’t get any good shots on birds, but I did get a good shot of this poison dart frog. Ash was jealous of my spotting the frog but she said she still won as she saw it.

The plan for the rest of the day was to head to Isla Bastimente. Transportation from our Airbnb has been a challenge. We are in the middle of nowhere. There aren’t very many taxis and the public bus supposedly runs once an hour but we have only seen it once on our trip so far.

We got lucky this morning though. An expat, Lobo, picked us up in his truck and chatted us up as he drove us into town. We made a lot of stops along the way (for him to watch his son surf, to drop off laundry, to help a German in a campervan). But we didn’t mind, we got to town an hour earlier than we expected.

We quickly caught a water taxi to Old Bank. It had a completely different feel – more Caribbean than Latin. the houses were painted bright colors and the people spoke creole.

We hiked from town to Wizard beach. It was hot and humid. The beach wasn’t swimmable though, and we decided to hike to Red Frog beach. Our host told us that was for the adventurous and she was right. the hike wasn’t that long but the trail wasn’t marked, and we made navigation mistakes. And really just walked through jungle most of the time.

The hike was arduous. It was hot and humid. The scenery titillated our senses and made it worthwhile.

The not so elusive Red Frog

We saw well over 20 Red Poison Dart Frogs, when we were told we would see none. It was jungle but right next to the beach, so we heard waves crashing the entire time. And the beaches were just gorgeous.

Sweating in the jungle

After an hour, we did reach Red Frog Beach. We had lunch on the beach and then took a water taxi back to Bocas town.

The luck on transportation didn’t hold on the way back. We got to Bocas Town fine, and were able to get some shopping (food, sunglasses for Ash since her are falling apart) done. But come time to catch the bus, or take a taxi, no one was to be found. We never saw the bus even after trying to find transport for over an hour. We did find a taxi but the wait in the hottest part of the day zapped us.
